Office Move Guide
Moving your business can be a time of high stress, but it doesn’t have to be. A well planned and organized office move breaks the process down into manageable phases, allowing for the excitement of the actual move to build for you and your employees.
In this document you will find information on how to prepare your Office IT for your move to your new location.
- Before You Move

- Is the network jack in your new office operable?
- Work with your IT contact if you are unsure.
- Is the network jack in your new office operable?
- Do you need a desk/hard phone if you don’t have one?
- Work with your IT contact to get a phone ordered.
- Using Wired Internet?
- Consider the layout in your new office.
- Your phone and computer should be located within 5 feet of the network jack to ensure the cord will be long enough to allow you to place your phone and computer in a suitable location.
- If using a local printer, it should be located at a distance that works for the length
of cable that connects your printer to your computer.
- MSU-UIT does not support wireless printing.
- Consider the layout in your new office.
- Work with your move coordinator to ensure that UIT has been made aware of the date
and location that you will need assistance setting up IT in new location.
- Make sure your desk will be in place before UIT assist in reconnecting your office IT.

- Disconnect and unplug computers components and phone.

- Ensure that all dongles have been removed from your computer and clearly labeled.
- These can easily be lost when moving.

- Once all components have been disconnected, you can pack up your computer.
- Laptop
- Consider bringing with you, otherwise place it in a box to be moved by Facilities.
- Desktop
- Place it in a box to be moved by Facilities.
- Phone
- Unplug all cords from the phone.
- Place it in a box to be moved by Facilities.
- Your phone information (name and extension) will follow you to your new office, no additional work is need.
- Printer
- Unplug all cords from the printer.
- Place it in a box to be moved by Facilities.
- Power Cords / Connector Cords / Power Bar
- Place all your cords in a single box, to be moved by Facilities.
- Scanner
- Unplug all cords from the scanner.
- Place it in a box to be moved by Facilities.
- Day of Move
- Ensure that your desk is in the correct location and position in your new office.
- This must be done before UIT will assist in reconnecting office IT.
- Work with move coordinator and/or IT contact to get assistance reconnecting your office IT.
- Connecting to a Central Printer or MFD (Multi-Function Device) / Copier/Printer/Fax/Scanner
- Work with you UIT contact to establish a connection to these devices.
- Ensure that your desk is in the correct location and position in your new office.
