Faculty Senate Meeting (Leon Johnson 346)

I.            Call to Order

a.      Meeting was called to order at 3:15pm.

II.            Approval of FS Minutes from October 26, 2022

a.      Tomas Gedeon moves to approve. Susanne Cowan seconds. None opposed. No abstentions. Approved. 

III.            FYI items

b.      AYCSS Early Alert in NavMSU – Nov 17- last day to drop with “W” grade.

c.       MSU’s first-ever Research Development Day – Jan 12, 2023

In addition to a keynote from the Head of NSF’s Office of Integrative Activities, Dr. Alicia Knoedler, the event will feature informational sessions and one-on-one consultations with federal program officers (advance sign-up required).

d.      Alumni Foundation Awards for Excellence Update – Return to the existing number of awards, the inclusion of Gallatin College and graduate students, rebranded and linked to Founders Day.

IV.            Information Updates: 

a.      ASMSU Representatives – Student Bill of Rights”-Payton, Senate Speaker/Garret Wright, Associate Justice

i.      Updated seven years ago

ii.      Next step in approval is the second read at University Council next week. Will then go to the Board of Regents. 

iii.      Covers Gallatin College and Grad students. 

iv.      How can faulty help to spread the awareness of the Bill of Rights?

A.      Would like to see this presented with the Code of Conduct. Documents hand-in-hand.

b.      The University “M”-Chris Pruden, Student Engagement, and EJ Hook, Facility Services

i.      When built in 1918 was the largest M anywhere

ii.      Created to look even from our angle on the ground in town. 

iii.      Questions/Comments

A.      Timeline for work group will be the next couple of months, after gathering feedback. 

B.      Working with the forest service and they are excited and engaged.

B.      Some students are running into trouble with the 400-level course offering. Because they are graduate students, school districts and administrators are looking for 500 level courses. Plus, there is a limit on how many 400 level courses can be on a graduate Program of Study. This course is of appropriate breadth and depth to be considered a 500-level course.

A.      This graduate program option is no longer available. Thus, the professional paper course is obsolete. This option was only used by 1 student since its inception over 30 years ago.

i.            M 571 : Principles of Action Research in Mathematics Education

A.      Course has not been offered in over a decade. Students instead take M 577.

ii.            M 572 : Investigating Problems in Mathematics Education

A.      Course has not been offered in over a decade. Students now take M 577 instead.

VII.            New Business

a.      Senate Leadership for Spring 2023

i.            Michael Brody will not be returning as Chair of Faculty Senate next semester. 

ii.            Will need to hold a special election for a new Chair Elect.

iii.            You can nominate colleagues, or you can nominate yourself. 

A.      Please spread the word

iv.            Timeline-Hope to have candidates on the Nov. 30th meeting so they can introduce themselves. 

A.      Will hold the vote the following meeting in December. 

v.            Questions

A.      Will Jennifer be the Chair for the entire 23-24 term?

1.      When we hold election, we will need to do a motion to discuss what that is going to look like. 

Ø      For Chair Elect as well

B.      If faculty are curious about special election, what do we do?

1.      Eric is on sabbatical in the Spring, so Chair Elect would step in for the Chair in that case anyway. 

VIII.            Senators’ Open Conversation

a.      Have had students asking about courses that are not being taught and when they will be taught again. Many of the old CBN courses. Is there a way to indicate to students that a course is “inactive”? Don’t want to inactivate it all together. 

i.            Will get some options to you.

ii.            Could make a comment in the course description.
