The pocket pets project is an excellent beginning project, especially
for younger members who want to learn about caring for animals.
Pets included in the learning materials are ferrets, snakes, turtles,
hamsters, gerbils, mice, fish, frogs, toads, lizards, birds, guinea
pigs and others.

Pocket Pets, Level 1

In this level, youth will learn about different kinds of pets, the costs to raise them and how to care for them. Members will also learn how to communicate effectively with others, how to make good decisions, how to be responsible and how to plan and organize.

Complete a minimum of seven activities and three learning experiences each year to complete this project. It may take three years to complete this level.

Pocket Pets, Level 2

At this level, youth will be presented with new opportunities to explore a wide range of pet-related activities. Members will learn about an animal’s digestive system, pet breeding, animal behavior, nutritional requirements for pets, comparison shopping, signs of good animal health and how pets communicate.

Complete a minimum of seven activities and five learning experiences each year to complete this project. It may take three years to complete this level.

Pocket Pets, Level 3

At this level, youth will learn about genetics, how to start their own business, the pet industry, explore animal welfare issues, think about the environment, investigate “pet” sayings, and learn about pet diseases. Members also find activities to explore careers and teach others

Complete a minimum of seven activities and five learning experiences each year to complete this project. It may take three years to complete this level.
