Residency Classification for Tuition Purposes
The Montana University System (MUS) classifies all applicants and students as either in-state or out-of-state for tuition purposes, in accordance with the Board of Regents’ Residency Policy (Policy 940.1). This classification impacts tuition rates and eligibility for limited-enrollment programs. A student’s initial residency status is determined during the admissions process based on the information provided in their admission application.
Students who believe they meet the criteria for in-state residency after receiving an initial out-of-state classification must complete a Residency Questionnaire and submit the required supporting documentation. Each petition is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and the burden of proof lies with the student to provide clear and convincing evidence of having met the residency requirements. Please note that submission of a questionnaire does not guarantee approval. Residency determinations are not provided verbally and will be communicated directly to the student. Residency Workshop
The Office of the Registrar offers an Introduction to Residency Workshop for current and returning undergraduate students. This weekly session provides an overview of the residency reclassification process, with opportunities for both students and parents to ask questions throughout.
