Tammie Brown-Butler
Retired chief housing officer and residence life director, Residence Life, MSU Auxiliary Services
Tammie Brown-Butler headed up the Residence Life Program for over 37 years at Montana State University. She oversaw the number of students living in residence halls grow from 1,900 to nearly 3,900 students. Despite the growing number of students, Brown-Butler consistently promoted the personal growth of all students with her mission to make the residence halls safe and developmental spaces. She helped plan new construction of residence halls, allowing them to become places for students to create a community. During that time, she also trained and influenced countless students and staff to successful professional careers in the housing and student success services fields of higher education, allowing her legacy to have a ripple effect on the MSU commmunity. She saw residence life as the “heart of MSU” and established an atmosphere where her staff, including many resident assistants and custodians, worked together as a family to support one another and the students of Montana State.
Tammie Brown-Butler headed up the Residence Life Program for over 30 years at MSU and, under her leadership, MSU won the 1998 School of the Year for its Residence Life Program.
