ITEM No. 1 – RECOMMENDATION – Sistine Chapel Paining Donation

Dean Adams thinks the painting is fine, not amazing. Caleb Fey voiced concern over the painting proposed proximity to the large windows in Harrison Hall and questioned what type of plexi-glass is being used. Richard answered that the painting comes from a gallery collection.

Kris Johnson feels that the painting feels random and not culturally appropriate. Richard stated that the committee can always vote no to accepting a donation. Melissa expressed a need for more defined standards when accepting donations. Richard answered that we can draft specific guidelines.

Dean expressed that the vote did not need to be unanimous. He feels that art should be accepted based on the artists merit. Dean also expressed that donors are good for the University and the committee should consider the repercussions of declining donations. Caleb mirrored Deans concerns.

Caleb questioned that without a mission, vision, and future we should not say no to donation and recommended drafting guidelines. Richard disagreed stating that it is in the committees charge to decide to accept or decline. Grant Petersen stated that the committee is tasked with deciding whether a piece its on the MSU campus.

Melissa stated that it feels like the University defaults to acceptance. She pointed out that oil on canvas is rather high maintenance to not be relevant to the campus. She also stated that the committee should take a more active role in bringing in donors instead of being reactive.

Richard explained that PAAC does have a brief mission and goals statement. The RFP/Q process has more defined guidelines.

Kate Johnson stated that from a student perspective the painting adds no value to the student experience since it is not relevant.

Dean Adams motioned to accept the Sistine Chapel

The motion was denied.
