Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)

The Department of Environmental Quality's mission is to protect, sustain, and improve a clean and healthful environment to benefit present and future generations.  The agency is responsible for the protection of public health and the environmental quality of Montana’s water resources.


Water Quality

The Water Program provides access to clean water is vital for both human health and Montana’s economy. We are committed to conserving this critical resource and taking action to protect the clean lakes, rivers, and streams that are a cherished part of Montana’s natural heritage.


Air Quality Division  

The Air Quality Program is the state agency responsible for maintaining and improving air quality to protect public health, welfare and the environment.  Programs which involve forest landowners are the Open Burning Season’s Program and the Smoke Management Program.  These programs are designed to allow open burning as described by the Air Quality Open Burning rules.  

The Air Quality Division is able to help individuals determine the allowed times for burning.

Montana Burn Permits and Information

Each county handles burn permits and timing.  It is important that you know the procedures and rules for your area.  To find out more about your county call the county office or search for “your county” burn permits.  You can also contact your local fire department.
