Internships are a key part of the Agricultural and Technology Education experience at Montana State University. They bridge classroom learning with hands-on application, helping students apply theory to “real-life” situations.
Students gain valuable professional skills, clarify career goals, and connect with leaders across agriculture, technology, and education sectors.

What Is an Internship?

An internship provides students with an opportunity to alternate academic study with supervised, off-campus work. These experiences are designed to:

  • Expand students’ technical and professional knowledge

  • Build leadership, communication, and teamwork skills

  • Help students explore career paths and set realistic goals

  • Strengthen partnerships between MSU, industry, and education

Major: Agriculture Communications
Internship: Ag Communications Intern at MSU Extension Communications | Bozeman, MT
"My role at the Extension Communications office is to support in all things communications! I work on social media posts, the Lives and Landscapes magazine, newsletters, conferences, website conversions, and more. This internship has taught me how to make communication efforts accessible to all, and I have been able to meet some really great people throughout Montana Extension!"
Advice for Students: My piece of advice is to use your networks when looking for internships. Ask around to graduating seniors and other peers, and be curious about what they are doing. This amazing opportunity would not have been available to me if I didn't ask!

Major: Agricultural Extension (Communications, Leadership, Extension)
Internship: Agronomic Sampling intern for Living Soil Management| Townsend, MT & Rexburg, ID
"The majority of my work involved collecting leaves of crops throughout the growing season,
shipping them to a lab and helping to analyze the sap samples. Periodically, I had the
opportunity to walk and talk with producers, discuss crop management decisions, and
take soil samples."
Advice for Students: "My advice to younger students would be to seize any opportunity for learning or working
experience that presents itself, time flies by."
