Kate Lain and Andrew Sobey's film, 200 Block, screening at the 2009 1 Reel Film Festival at Bumbershoot, Seattle’s annual music and arts festival.

The film, 200 Block, is one of 100 US and international short films included in this year’s program. 1 Reel Film Festival, now in its 14th year, is curated by Seattle International Film Festival. This year’s program will feature 24 themed programs. 200 Block will screen as part of “The Meaning of Life” block at 8pm on Sunday, September 6.

200 Block is a documentary short that was made in the immediate aftermath of the explosion that shook downtown Bozeman earlier this year on March 5. The film explores the emotional climate of Bozeman in the days following this disaster. It is a meditation on history-in-progress in this small Western city. The entire film was made in five days, from March 5-9, as part of the 2009 International Documentary Challenge.

Lain and Sobey are graduate students in Montana State University’s Master’s of Fine Arts Program in Science and Natural History Filmmaking, the only program of its kind in the world. They are currently finishing post-production on a series of short films about global warming, produced for broadcast in the Caribbean through Trinidad and Tobago’s National Institute of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (NIHERST). They are also each currently working on their thesis papers and films. Lain’s focus is on the relationships between experimental cinema, gender ideology, and traditional science documentary. Sobey is looking at the potential for film to be used as a medium for folk art, exploring regional subject matter and eschewing high-gloss aesthetics.
